The Greek and Latin Reading Groups
These biweekly reading groups offer an informal and collaborative environment for reading, translating, and discussing selected passages from Latin and Greek texts. All students and faculty at different stages of their academic careers who are working on improving their Latin or Greek language skills are welcome. Each session will focus on a text circulated in advance, combining close linguistic reading with discussion of historical context, interpretation, and reception. Participants will consider not only how to understand the texts, but also how close engagement with them can generate new research questions and perspectives. The default texts will be Classical but Medieval or Early Modern, Neo-Latin and Neo-Greek texts may also be included upon request.
The groups will meet in Pratt Library, Room 304 on Thursdays from 3:00 to 5:00 pm throughout the Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 academic terms, alternating weekly between Latin and Greek (one week Latin, the following week Greek). Snacks and coffee, tea will be provided. Whether you are looking to strengthen your reading skills, engage with Classical, Medieval, and Early modern texts for your research, or simply explore the ancient traditions that shaped Renaissance and Reformation cultures, the groups offer an opportunity for collective learning, discussion, and intellectual exchange.
For further information about the groups or to suggest a Latin/Greek text to read during the term, please contact Dr Giulio Leghissa at giulio.leghissa@mail.utoronto.ca.
