Toronto Chamber Choir: “Air, Fire, Earth & Water: The Renaissance Sense of Humour(s)”
Sunday Nov. 2 at 3:00 PM, Church of the Redeemer (162 Bloor St. W. at Avenue Road)
Would you believe that the Oxford English Dictionary contains fifteen definitions for the word “humour”?
Join Canadian actor R.H. Thompson and the Toronto Chamber Choir as we unpack at least a few of those meanings, in a hilarious and poignant program of sixteenth-century madrigals, chansons, and part songs. We’ll explore the medical theory of humourism, from its development in ancient Greece and evolution through to the Renaissance. According to this theory, our temperaments and moods are determined by the balance of four bodily liquids (“humours”): blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm.
And we may just pose some questions about whether our modern mind/body beliefs are so very different from these ancient theories we’re supposed to have left behind in the Enlightenment!
This delightful Kaffeemusik program will be our first under our new Artistic Director, Lucas Harris, and will include solo work by members of our new Toronto Chamber Consort.
Home-baked treats and refreshments are served after the performance.
