Illustrated talk by Professor E. Natalie Rothman, Department of History, University of Toronto at Scarborough. Dragomans were principal actors in the making and circulation of news in the Ottoman capital, itself one of the main hubs of early modern diplomatic knowledge-production. This lecture explores the formation and transformation of dragoman dynasties in the service of the Venetian embassy in Istanbul, and the ways in which these dynasties helped to shape political, religious, and linguistic boundaries in the early modern Mediterranean.
