Early Modern Paratexts 2013 is a one-day conference bringing together researchers and readers who are interested in early modern paratexts.
Keynote speaker: Dr Helen Smith (University of York)
Paratexts, as Gérard Genette describes them, are liminal textual elements – such as prologues, glosses, notes, title pages – that mediate relationships between the parties interested in the book. This conference seeks to explore how these elements manifest themselves and function within early modern literature. A range of speakers will present their research across seven panels: People of the Paratext; Prefacing the Text; ‘And Another Thing …’; The Paratext Proper; Disrupting Reading; Shaping and Reshaping; Reading Materials. Thanks to the generous support of the Society for Renaissance Studies and the Department of English, we have a limited number of postgraduate fee bursaries available. Priority for these is given to speakers, but there are some additional bursaries available for general postgraduate delegates whose main research is in the early modern period. If you would like to receive a bursary, please email earlymodernparatexts2013@gmail.com, prior to registration; please attach a letter of support from your supervisor confirming your status.
The conference is being held in Clifton Hill House, on Lower Clifton Hill in Bristol. A downloadable map is available above. Please note that Clifton Hill House is not in the main university precinct, but a short (10 minute) walk away. It will take about 10-15 minutes to get to Clifton Hill House in a taxi from Bristol Temple Meads station or 20-30 minutes on a bus (see the Maps and Travel link above; you can use the same buses as for the university precinct).
Local accommodation information can also be found via the Maps and Travel link. There is a limited amount of university accommodation available at Goldney Hall, next door to Clifton Hill House.
