48th Erasmus Lecture: James Hankins, Professor of History, Harvard University, “The Roman Republic in the Italian Renaissance”

James Hankins is a Professor of History at Harvard University who specialises in Renaissance intellectual history, history of political thought, philosophy, and the history of the classical tradition. He is the editor of many volumes, most recently The Cambridge Companion to Renaissance Philosophy (2007), Marsilio Ficino: Platonic Theology (six volumes, 2001-2007), Humanism and Platonism in the Italian Renaissance (two volumes, 2000), and Renaissance Civic Humanism: Reappraisals and Reflections (2000). Professor Hankins is also a Founder and General Editor of the I Tatti Renaissance Library, published by Harvard University Press, and Associate Editor of the Catalogus Translationum and of Commentariorum (Union Academique Internationale).
