This little volume contains the first written account of the history of the CRRS from its earliest beginnings to the present day. Based on archival records as well as on interviews with the principal protagonists, it explains why the Centre was founded and describes how it developed out of modest local beginnings to become the internationally recognized research centre that it is today. In so doing, it brings to light many aspects of the Centre’s history that have hitherto not been widely known.

The Author

James M. Estes is a Reformation scholar and Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Toronto. He arrived at Victoria College in 1962 and has been intimately involved in the history of the CRRS ever since its foundation in 1964. He was Director of the Centre from 1979 to 1985. At the time of his retirement in 1997, he was appointed Distinguished Senior Fellow of the Centre.

Ed. Jacqueline Glomski and Erika Rummel. (1994) An annotated and illustrated catalogue of one of the major collections of Erasmiana in North America and the most extensive in Canada.

153 pp. ISBN 978-0-9697512-1-2 $19.00 (Outside Canada, please pay in US $.)

The Centre’s collection of early editions of Erasmus is one of the most comprehensive in North America. The present catalogue updates earlier lists of the Centre’s holdings of Erasmus and in addition provides information not found in the computerized catalogue of the University of Toronto. This includes bibliographical references, titles of tracts printed or bound with the main entry, and, where relevant, descriptions of bindings and marks of ownership. This last item in particular recognizes that each book has its unique history. The printed text reflects the views, tastes, and personality of the author, but the book as physical object often reflects the views, tastes, and personality of the owner, who chose the binding, autographed the book, entered information relating to its acquisition, and left doodles or marginalia in the text. Pointing out these marks of ownership, the catalogue serves not only the scholar interested in a specific edition of the text, but also the social historian who wants to trace the reception of the book.

The Authors

Jacqueline Glomski is Assistant Librarian at the Warburg Institute, University of London.

Erika Rummel is Associate Professor of History at Wilfred Laurier University. She is the editor of The Erasmus Reader (1990) and of several volumes in the Collected Works of Erasmus; her books include Erasmus and his Catholic Critics (1989) and Erasmus as a Translator of the Classics (1985).

By Millar MacLure; Rev. P. Pauls and J.C. Boswell. (1989) An updated edition of MacLure's classic study.

152 pp. ISBN 978-0-919473-48-5 $16.00 (Outside Canada, please pay in US $.)

In his comprehensive and scholarly study, The Paul’s Cross Sermons Professor MacLure states that he has “set up … the Register of Sermons to serve three purposes: (1) to provide a journal of occasions at Paul’s Cross over a century, which may be read independently or used as a reference work in chronology; (2) to serve as a substitute for many otherwise necessary footnotes; (3) in conjunction with the index of names, to fill the place of a short-title bibliography of published sermons.” MacLure’s register lists many frequently overlooked public events, proclamations and sermons which, taken together, shed considerable light on the temper of the times, the implementation of official government policies and the everyday life of Londoners during the Tudor and Stuart Periods.

This new edition of the register presents MacLure’s original data intact, with newly discovered material inserted at the appropriate points and clearly marked. Wherever possible, doubtful dates have been confirmed and missing dates, sermon texts and Short-Title Catalogue numbers provided.
